The Porch - The happy space nested betwist nature and nest

I love the snow but today it was so bright inside that all the three "d's" Dirt,Dust, & Dog hair were everywhere..ugh..so I spent today cleaning while dreaming about a beautiful porch....much like in the pictures in "The Porch" by James T Farmer III. A grand porch, a deck, lanai, patio...to sip your ice tea, read your book, settle your thoughts, be with friends and neighbors. Summer days, longer days, definitely warmer weather, endorphins abound, playing in the garden, or easy living. Big over sized rocking chairs, a porch swing? Yes! Rocking chairs aren't for real old pep's anymore. A porch can be the ultimate home relaxation destination. (for those of us who don't get away much)

Spent relaxing or with friends, I want my porch to be a welcome mat always ready for expected and drop in visitors. A few very comfy chairs with cushions (so pretty they have to come inside at night) and a few that don't. Beautiful pots bursting with glorious floral combinations. Umbrellas for the fair skinned, me, and let's face it, that's most of us. And music.

If creating the perfect porch is a challenge, get a copy of "The Porch" by James T Farmer III. It's a eye catching book filled with 100 beautiful color photographs to inspire you onward to decorating your porch in your personal style.

Don't think my porch is the cats pajamas...no! We have some aluminum or plastic (no sure) pipe chairs with plastic slats and cushions that don't fit. Nail heads popping up everywhere so that if you're barefoot .... ouch...it's a mine field for bare feet. And the old rusty barbecue that needs to go north to the dump (along with a rope swing chair that pushes your head so far forward and down it's an instant headache). There! That said...I have a lot of work to do to make our porch/deck something better. I have my copy of The Porch and ordered a few more just in case you too need some inspiration. Ya I know there is snow on the ground today but that's got me thinking about warmer days and how I want to spend them. What were you thinking about today? Do you have a favorite porch or deck idea? Or did you make snowmen and go sledding?

Confessions of a DIY Wanabe

I have been having fun looking at some of the blogs that people follow. It all started one day when I was here, on this blog (Frenchburiedtreasures!). I clicked on one of the blogs that Kristine reads, and then I clicked on a blog from that site, and then I clicked on a blog from that site, and somewhere along the way I found out about Annie Sloan Chalk Paint (or ASCP, for short}Website: www.anniesloan.com I knew nothing about her, but it turned out that I already had one of her books at home, courtesy of my local library! WOW, I guess I was headed in the right direction to DIY Ville!

I wanted to see some of that paint in person! I wanted to pick someone’s brain about if it really was all that it was cracked up to be. Low and behold, a “Stockist” (UK term for “retailer”, and listed on Annie’s site) was only about 30 minutes from my house! How fortunate was that? It was meant to be. It was Karma. It was a miracle! I felt a road trip coming on.

My closest Stockist is The Bella Bungalow in Arlington, WA. I go there for inspiration, for motivation, for some kind of creative spark. I look at all of the colors of the ASCP. I oooh and aaaaah at all of the beautiful furniture that Kim and Kelly have repurposed (a fancy name for making something look better than it did before so that you aren’t ashamed to have it in your home). ~ I asked if I could take photos...Kim graciously said “Absolutely!” when I asked! Thanks, Kim.~

This is MY style of Gothic! You either love this, or you don’t. I do!

I say to myself: “Gee, it can’t be that hard”. I smile, I chat. I walk out the door. I come back another day. I bring my husband this time. I smile, I chat. We buy. We walk out the door.

My excitement is barely contained! I can do this project! I can paint and wax a piece of furniture in 45 minutes! They did it, and I shall, too!

Really? 45 minutes? Are you serious? It’ll take me 45 minutes just to find the screwdriver to pop off the lid on that $38 pot of paint.* “It’s a girl’s paint”? Ok, I’m a girl. I can do it! “You can’t mess it up”, they say! Really? If anyone can mess something up, it’s me. “Just paint back over it, if you don’t like it”. Phew, now I’m safe. I can paint, redo, paint, redo, paint, redo, to my heart’s content. Hmmm, how many layers can be painted with one of those pots of paint? **

I have a huge project in mind - that’s why we bought the paint. I’m the type of person that doesn’t start with the little stuff. Oh no, not me. Maybe I should start with a picture frame. I have plenty of those lying around. I have to practice on something. Nope, don’t have time to waste, have to keep moving. I want to have my project done in two weeks – I’m having a Buffet Soiree (cool how that rhymes, huh?). I want to show off my artistic ability! I want to dazzle my guests with my brilliance!

What is my huge project, you ask? Ok, maybe you didn’t ask, but I’m going to tell you anyway! I am taking 3 cabinet pieces, and repurposing (remember that word?) them together to make a china hutch. I can see it in my head! It’ll be beautiful! It’ll be functional! It’ll be a classic! It can’t fail – I’m using ASCP! Of course I won’t tell you how many pots of paint I end up using!

*FYI – Kim and Kelly have a starter set that saves you 17%.

**FYI – One pot of paint is a quart. You can paint approximately 150 sq ft with one pot. If you are a visual person, like I am, here’s help: The “Cocoa” color on the 4 piece bedroom set was painted with one pot.

New Goals 2012 - Winter Blahs - Resolved!

I'm itching to do something different this year. Maybe a painting or paint stripes on a wall or someone else's wall? Maybe all I need to do is get out a can of paint and I'll feel better? Pent up creativity I think. So after thinking this out ( and believe me it took longer than this) and not throwing the baby out with the bath water, my life has returned to normal.

1. Loose the holiday fat
2. Walk, run, both
3. Paint stripes somewhere.

Phew! Somedays you just have to vent. Thanks.

Creating the French Look

Thanks to my customer & blog friend Kathe, I've learned of a workshop nearby in Arlington Wa. where they teach an all day class on Ann Sloan Chalk painting and Creating the French Look, the shop "Bella Bunglalow", We have an oak table (it's 30 years old) that isn't pretty I'd like to practice on using the technique below.

Kellyanne from Bella Bungalow literally dusted off the cobwebs from this fabulous old chair. With Annie Sloan paint, there was no need for primer or sanding.

Kellyanne used a wash technique on the arms, a single layer of paint on the legs and a crackle technique on the front and top of the chair. All followed up by a little dark wax.

From start to finish, including drying time, the project took 45 minutes.

I am obsessed with this Christmas Tree...this beautiful vintage paper Christmas tree at Christiansen's Nursery which was bought from someone on Craigs List is drop dead beautiful and not for sale. I think I would have paid $200 for it if they'd let it go (sans the ornaments). There's got to be another one just like it or someone with instructions for making one. If anyone knows how to make a paper Christmas tree just like this one please please contact me.

Now that everyone else I know is completely done with their Christmas shopping, decorating, Christmas cards, and baking here I sit...

OK...we're sitting by the fire singing Christmas carols. Ha!

Although we've engaged in quite a few musical events this year I do admit to procrastination and that I work better under pressure is most of the problem.

OK....whatever it is... it now includes some butterflies in the stomach and lots of that lost in space feeling.

My special little Christmas tree activity is going to be #1.

So it's going to be just me and my pen notepad this morning and the to-do Christmas list.

I can say our main tree(s) is up and the lights are hung outside, and we did make some festive home-made marshmallows and graham crackers last night using some of our MSG powers which turned out delicious! (msg powers can unfortunately be obtained from store bought veggie trays)

Betty Crocker, Ina, Paula, Anne and Julia types avert your eyes because here's those same puffy marshmallows this morning.

So we don't feel too bad since it's our first attempt

Have a super relaxing fun day doing all your favorite things.

Holiday Breakfast Wreath Recipe

Given to me by my good friend Kay who got it from a 1978 Sunset Magazine.

I hope it becomes one of your family traditions as it has become one of ours.

Holiday Breakfast Wreath with Cherry-Almond Filling

makes about 12 servings

1 packet active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water (about 110° F)
1/2 cup warm milk (about 110° F)
3 tablespoons sugar
1/4 cup butter, softened to room temperature
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon cardamom powder
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons grated lemon peel
3 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour

For the Cherry-Almond Filling:
3/4 cup candied cherries (dried cherry’s can be substituted if you want to soak them ahead in a liquor of some type, I like the candied cherries best)
6 tablespoons butter, softened to room temperature
1/3 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
3/4 cup finely chopped blanched almonds
3 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon freshly grated lemon peel
1 teaspoon almond extract

For the Sugar Glaze:
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder

In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast in the water and let it foam up for a minute or two. Blend in the milk, sugar, butter, salt, cardamom, eggs and lemon peel. Stir in two cups of the flour, one cup at a time. Beat for 2 minutes. Add remaining flour 1/2 cup at a time until you have a soft, workable dough. Note: You might not use all the flour.

Dump the dough out onto a lightly floured board and knead until smooth, about 5 to 10 minutes, adding more flour if needed to prevent sticking. Place in a lightly oiled mixing bowl large enough to accommodate dough when doubled in size. Cover with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place until doubled (about 1 1/2 hours).

Meanwhile, prepare the Cherry-Almond Filling: Combine the cherries with remaining filling ingredients. Cover and refrigerate.

When dough has risen and doubled in size, punch it down and turn it out onto a lightly floured board, kneading just enough to release any air bubbles. Roll the dough into a 9- by 30-inch rectangle. Crumble the filling over the dough to within 1 inch of the edges. Starting along a long side, tightly roll up the dough, pinching edge against loaf to seal. With a sharp knife, cut roll in half lengthwise, carefully turn cut sides up, and loosely twist ropes around each other, keeping cut sides up. (See photos below for an illustration these steps.)

Carefully transfer the wreath to a greased and floured baking sheet and shape into a wreath, pinching ends together to seal. Let it rise, uncovered, in a warm place until puffy, about 45 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350° F. Bake wreath until lightly browned, about 25 minutes. While wreath is baking, Prepare Sugar Glaze by stirring together ingredients until smooth.

When wreath is done, transfer to a cooling rack with wide spatulas or a pizza peel. Cool for a few minutes then drizzle the glaze over the warm wreath. Serve sliced with extra butter if you're feeling decadent.

The wreath can be prepared up to 2 days ahead of time, cooled completely and wrapped tightly in foil. Store at room temperature then re-heat at 350° for 10-15 minutes, drizzling the glaze just before serving.

‘Twas the night before Christmas

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house,

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

NOT!

“Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house,

Not a creature was sleeping, not even a mouse.

The baby was screaming, the dog chased the cat,

I was so stressed out, I screamed into my hat.

I looked at my list, and checked it twice,

Why didn’t I feel like anyone was nice?

I forgot to buy the tinsel; I was out of stinkin’ tape,

“What else is next?!” I fumed, as I put on my cape.

I wrapped up the baby, and walked out the door,

I fought all the traffic as I drove to the store.

I circled the lot trying to find a place to park,

“Why are so many people here?” I started to bark.

The tinsel was all gone! They had tons of it last week!

I couldn’t believe it, I couldn’t even speak.

A tree without tinsel? The thoughts whirled through my head,

Why, oh why wasn’t I home sleeping in bed?

I’m tired, I’m crabby, I can’t even think,

I still have more baking to do, and dishes piled high in thesink.

I grabbed the tape and rushed to the nearest checker,

The lines were so long, I wanted to bang my head like awoodpecker.

The baby was still screaming, and I was getting stares,

I smiled and acted as if I didn’t have a care.

Where were the simpler times of so long ago?

They seemed to have all disappeared, like the missing snow.

As I stood in line my thoughts wandered back,

To a little baby born in a stable, and then WHACK!

The person behind me hit my ankle with her cart,

I came back to the present with a painful start.

I turned and smiled sweetly, waiting to hear her say “PardonMe!”,

Instead, she gave me a look that made me feel as small as aflea.

I felt my face turn red, the temperature started to rise,

I really, really wanted to punch her right between the eyes!

Then all of a sudden, I felt my anger fade,

An angel surely must have come to my aid.

I quietly began to hum and then sing a beautiful song,

And all of a sudden I was startled to hear others singing along.

Silent Night, Holy Night. All is Calm, All is Bright.

As I waited in line, I sang with all of my might,

I felt the stress leave and I now felt alright.

The singing was over, and all was still,

Then the checker’s slowly started to ring up their till.

Surprisingly, I no longer wanted to scream or cry,

And I started smiling at people, and telling them “hi”.

While I stood there in line with a smile on my face,

I knew that I was happy in this busy, busy place.

Even though life is crazy and fast,

There is still a longing for a simpler past.

A time when people truly knew the reason,

That we celebrate this wonderful holiday season.

We remember the birth of a babe long ago,

A hope of salvation, a glimmer, a glow.

We think of His life, how He loved and He cared,

How He kept helping others, of how He shared.

So how is it that the holiday season,

Has turned into one that no one can reason?

The lesson I learned this Christmas at last,

Was that things hadn’t changed from the Christmas of past.

It was me that had changed, I followed the crowd,

“I have forgotten what matters”, I said, out loud.

I finished at the store and started to drive,

Snow started falling, and I felt alive.

All of a sudden an angel whispered in my ear,

Something precious, that I needed to hear.

Silent Night, Holy Night. All is Calm, All is Bright.

May I introduce to you my lovely shopping assistant, Davis 3 1/2 yrs.

Gingham arm chair - so cute.

This tree really defines for me what the holidays are all about.

Single handedly Jenna installed the ceiling you see below. Imagine how many times she climbed up and down the ladder! This is sheeting filled with insulation. It's really beautiful and warm looking. I want to do this because we don't have canned lights in our ceiling.

Local 6 String fiddler named Geoffrey Castle, fantastic 6 string violinist, who travels around the country destroying people's preconceived notions of what a violin can do! He's has earned the title "Jaw Dropping Rock Violinist". Tonight we heard a song off his Christmas CD and my intentions are to play this cd until it doesn't want to spin anymore. Just fantastic! And according to Geoffrey we can start to enjoy Christmas right after September 1st, gosh and here I thought we had to wait till after Thanksgiving. Time to decorate! Merci Geoffrey.

Starting to Panic? Me too! It's hard for me to take a break from work and focus on the big day but thanks to all the blogs I'm heavily reminded that time to prepare a centerpiece has nearly come and gone. This weekend is it for me because there's Cyber Monday. I think after that I will find time to cook.

Are you making your centerpiece? Have any simple ideas. I like simple subjects. Below are a few.

I'll set our table Monday, shop and start baking on Tuesday afternoon thru Wednesday, clean house Wednesday. Get up real early Thursday and get everything else done so that when people arrive to prepare their dish most of my prep is done and I can relax and help them with anything they need to do.

I am such a cozy warm fireplace person in the Fall & Winter time but have lived 8 long years without one when we agreed to take out three in different parts of our home, a remodel/energy conservation effort. Long story but one decision I do regret to say the least.

Inspired now tho by these images, there seems to be a possibilility to create a faux hearth in our living room and think any of these are possible.. with a little help. You've inspired me so I am considering...it's true, it's time.

Finally "Home Sweet Home" for Sweetie!

Sweetie the Conue had to wait 5 months for her new home. Lindsay, Sweetie's owner, had incredible patience to wait with us for this delivery and we are so happy to see it has arrived. "Sweetie" has made a nice transition to her 2nd home. Lindsay says to tell everyone "it's so light weight that she can carry it everywhere, including outside where it's super easy to clean out and let "Sweetie" have some fresh air.

Sweetie is a Conure which looks like a large parakeet.

I think that Sweetie looks very happy in her new home!

Thanks for putting up with me while I tried out the new blogger designs, but really, that's just an excuse as anyone will tell you who comes over to cook in our kitchen that I have an obsession with rearranging and redesigning. I think that's why I can't decide on a brand image. And our poor kids are lucky if the silverware stays in the same drawer for one year! But I think we'll stay in this design for awhile.
Make it a good Monday! I plan on using my new pink stamp pad on some Thank You notes...

Fall Fever

My favorite time of year is here. I love this season. Frankly, I adore this season. The cooler weather, a slower pace in the garden, weeds are pretty much at bay, the kitchen is more fun to be in since it's not so hot out, time for baking. On the other hand I am so frustrated because of all the fun things and I am finding myself sitting here doing nothing but being a in a total funk of What to do. Maybe a list would help? Better Home & Gardens has some lovely ideas for decorating this Fall. Today I am so grateful to have some time to work it all out ....oh wait ...my services have been requested out as a deck hand...shoot! It's nice to be needed. To be continued

I have a very good explanation....Traditionally we do the 12 Days of Christmas at Maison de Kristine starting December 1st and I know it's only September 13th but it's probably better to start now so everybody has the means and ways to participate. A little bit about Love Birds from The Bird Guys

Love Birds need a fairly large bird cage as they need to expend all of their energy. A cage 2 feet by 2 feet and 2 feet high is big enough for a single bird but if you can afford a bigger one that's even better. Be careful when purchasing a cage to get one with bars quite close together. Love Birds are the Harry Houdinis of the bird world and can squeeze out of many cages other birds cannot. Also, make sure the door latches are secure as picking locks is another Love Bird forte. Love Birds are notorious chewers so take care with wooden cages. If you must have one be ready to replace it when the love bird has chewed it to bits.
